The communities of Tetonia, Idaho, and Mammoth Lakes, California, are mourning the tragic loss of Nicholas “Nick” Besobrasow, 66, and David Page, 57, who died following a devastating multi-vehicle crash on Teton Pass on Tuesday. The fatal collision, which also left four others injured, occurred after a dump truck carrying asphalt reportedly experienced brake failure while traveling down Highway 22.
According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol’s preliminary investigation, the eastbound dump truck lost control shortly before noon near the Wyoming Department of Transportation sand shed and Trail Creek Ranch above Wilson. Investigators said the truck struck a motorcycle, two pickup trucks, a Subaru, and another vehicle before overturning and coming to rest on its side.
Emergency responders arrived to find multiple heavily damaged vehicles, asphalt spilled across the roadway, and a significant portion of Highway 22 blocked. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, while four others were transported to St. John’s Health with injuries described as minor to moderate.
The Teton County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Nicholas “Nick” Besobrasow of Tetonia, Idaho, and David Page of Mammoth Lakes, California.
Nick Besobrasow was widely respected as the founder of Alupka Asset Management in Driggs, Idaho. During a career spanning more than three decades, he helped clients pursue their financial goals through thoughtful investment management and financial planning. His professional experience included working with major Wall Street firms and managing the Alupka Absolute Return Fund. Colleagues and clients remember him for his expertise, integrity, and dedication to those he served.
David Page was a respected writer, producer, backcountry traveler, and conservation advocate who served as director of the Winter Wildlands Alliance. He devoted much of his life to promoting outdoor recreation, protecting public lands, and advancing conservation initiatives. His work and advocacy earned him the admiration of colleagues and members of the outdoor community across the country.
The crash prompted a large-scale emergency response involving Jackson Hole Fire/EMS, the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the Teton County Sheriff’s Office, Teton County Emergency Management, the Jackson Police Department, St. John’s Medical Center, and several other responding agencies. Highway 22 remained closed for several hours as investigators documented the scene, recovered vehicles, and cleared debris from the roadway.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. Preliminary findings indicate that brake failure was a contributing factor in the crash, although investigators are continuing to examine all aspects of the incident. Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
