SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA — The Sioux Falls community is mourning the death of James R. Meyer, 55, who died Tuesday night, July 7, 2026, following an officer-involved shooting during a police response to a welfare check at a residence on East 20th Street.
According to authorities, officers with the Sioux Falls Police Department responded to a home in the 3200 block of East 20th Street shortly before 10 p.m. after receiving a report requesting a welfare check. Officials stated that during the response, an individual inside the residence allegedly opened fire on the responding officers, prompting an exchange of gunfire.
During the confrontation, one Sioux Falls police officer was struck by gunfire. The injured officer was transported to a local hospital, where officials said they were being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities identified the deceased individual as James R. Meyer of Sioux Falls. Officials said Meyer died at the scene after officers returned fire during the incident.
The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has assumed responsibility for investigating the officer-involved shooting.
