SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA — Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left James R. Meyer, 55, of Sioux Falls, dead and a Sioux Falls police officer injured late Tuesday night, July 7, 2026.
According to the Sioux Falls Police Department, officers responded shortly before 10 p.m. to a residence in the 3200 block of East 20th Street after receiving a request to conduct a welfare check. Officials said that upon arriving at the scene, an individual inside a garage allegedly opened fire on the responding officers.
Police reported that officers took cover as the gunfire continued, but one officer was struck during the exchange. The injured officer was transported to a local hospital, where they received treatment for injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.
Officers returned fire during the confrontation, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities later identified the deceased as James R. Meyer, 55, of Sioux Falls.
The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has assumed responsibility for investigating the officer-involved shooting at the request of the Sioux Falls Police Department. Investigators continue to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and review the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley stated that the DCI will prepare a comprehensive investigative report and shooting summary for review by the Attorney General’s Office. Following that review, officials will determine whether the officers’ actions were legally justified. Authorities expect the investigative summary to be released within approximately 30 days.
