
HEIDELBERG, SOUTH AFRICA — A devastating head-on collision on the N2 outside Heidelberg in South Africa’s Garden Route has claimed the lives of five people, including four members of the same family, leaving communities in mourning and prompting an ongoing police investigation.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday when a Toyota minibus and an SUV collided head-on. Emergency services and police responded to the scene, where several victims were found with critical injuries.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies, three people were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Two additional victims, who had been transported to hospitals in Cape Town and Riversdale with serious injuries, later succumbed to their injuries.
Among those killed were two brothers, aged 13 and 20, who were traveling with their parents in the SUV. The boys’ 44-year-old father and 41-year-old mother also died as a result of the crash, wiping out an entire family. Authorities have not yet publicly released their identities pending official procedures and family notifications.
The fifth victim was identified as 34-year-old Michelé Lombard, a resident of Eljada Nasorgsentrum in Oudtshoorn, a residential care facility for adults with intellectual disabilities. In a heartfelt tribute, the center remembered Lombard as a cherished member of its community whose kindness, warmth, and joyful spirit positively impacted everyone around her.
In addition to the fatalities, ten other people sustained serious injuries and were transported to medical facilities for treatment.
Police said preliminary information indicates the Toyota minibus was traveling toward Swellendam while the SUV was heading in the opposite direction when the collision occurred. Investigators are working to determine what caused the vehicles to collide.
A culpable homicide case has been opened as authorities continue gathering evidence, examining the crash scene, and interviewing witnesses to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Hessequa Mayor Grant Riddles expressed his condolences to the families affected by the crash, describing the incident as heartbreaking and wishing those injured a full and speedy recovery.
The tragedy has deeply affected communities across the Garden Route, as family members, friends, and loved ones mourn the lives lost in one of the region’s deadliest recent road accidents. As the investigation continues, many are remembering the victims not for the manner of their deaths but for the lives they lived and the memories they leave behind.
Funeral arrangements for the victims have not yet been publicly announced. Authorities are expected to release additional information as the investigation progresses.
