The Peoria community is mourning the loss of Damien Gulliford, a 45-year-old resident whose body was recovered from the Illinois River earlier this week. Authorities have confirmed his identity following an investigation by the Peoria Police Department and the Peoria County Coroner’s Office.
Police said Gulliford was identified through fingerprint analysis and the examination of distinctive tattoos. His family was notified after officials confirmed his identity.
According to authorities, officers with the Peoria Police Department and members of the Peoria Fire Department responded at approximately 9:14 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2026, to the 400 block of Southwest Water Street after receiving reports of a body floating near the shoreline of the Illinois River.
Firefighters recovered the body from the water, and the Peoria County Coroner’s Office took custody as investigators began working to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
